This reproduction of a Map of Islesborough was taken from the larger map of Waldo County published in 1859 by JR Chase, Jr. and Co. of Portland and Philadelphia. It was the first measured map of Islesboro and most other towns in Waldo County. It pinpoints the name of every residence, workplace, church, and school. The population of Islesboro in the 1860 census was 1,276, the highest of any time in its history.

Distances were measured with a wheel odometer, sometimes horsedrawn, by a surveyor who would ask the name of each famstead owner as he passed by. The surveyor would also make a sales pitch advising each person where they could purchase the map for $5 once it became available.

The map was printed on 4 seperate sheets glued to a cloth backing. Copies of the full map can be see at the Penobscot Marine Museum' in Searsport and the Library of Congress.

The Islesboro portion was extracted from the larger map. Copies have been donated to the ICC by Lang and Marilyn Smith. We are very grateful for their contribution!
